The B in ABLE · Belonging

Everyone should be able to belong.

Belonging means being recognised as a valued member of a family, workplace, school, neighbourhood and wider community.

What belonging means

Inclusion is not achieved by invitation alone. Disabled people must be able to participate without facing avoidable barriers, lowered expectations or assumptions about what they can contribute.

Belonging respects difference and individual choice. It supports relationships, identity, independence and the freedom to take part in ways that are meaningful to each person.

From welcome to inclusion

  • Listen to disabled people.
  • Make participation accessible.
  • Challenge exclusion and stereotypes.
  • Respect each person’s decisions.
  • Include disabled people in the planning and leadership of community life.

A community belongs to everyone who lives in it.
